The Blaze is a single handed boat with wings (commonly known as racks) to increase the sitting out power. It was designed in 1996 by Ian Howlett, originally with a fully battened sail but then modified in 2001 to provide an easier to handle sail plan. The boat has now been modified again for 2008 to improve the deck layout & the boats overall engineering integrity. However, the under water shape however is still exactly the same so even the earliest boats are very competitive.

The rig is very adaptable & can be set up to accommodate a wide range of crew weights that can vary from 70-95k (11-15 stone), but some considerably heavier helms still do well even in the lightest of conditions.

The Blaze sails off a PY of 1047 & really excels in a breeze (F3 & up) & on close reaches can sail past most boats. There are about 750 Blazes in the UK and it is encouraging to report that there is a shortage of pre-owned boats, all of which means that they hold their value very well. Prices range from around £2500 to £7500 for a brand new boat.

Blaze’s benefit from an active Class Association & hold regular open meetings and National Championships, at both costal & inland venues throughout the season. Due in no small part to its competitive fleet of 7 boats (many of whom race most weekends), Bala hosted the 2007 Inland Championships & hopes to do so again in 2009.

Hulls for new boats are built by Rondar Boats and complete packages are available from Cirrus Raceboats. Adverts for most used boats appear on the Blaze web site, but boats can also be found popping up in the likes of Yachts & Yachting and Dinghy Sailing Magazine.
