| Family Week 2001 This proved to be a very pleasant, relaxed week, characterised by a friendly co-operative atmosphere, under the direction of Billy Maguire. There were two races scheduled for each day. On Monday the very strong (force 4 to 5) wind, blowing from the southwest, was relished by Dave Wall in his Contender, Anna McGeoch and Jeff Kenworthy in their Lasers and Mike Davidson in his Blaze. Tuesdays wind was stronger, increasing in strength during the day and reaching a force 6 to 7. Only the bravest or most foolhardy ventured out and they all ended up up-side-down. Only Mike Davidson and Jeff Kenworthy, from Scaling Dam, finished the race which was cut short after one lap. By Wednesday, things had calmed down and mostly those who favour lighter winds came through. Cath and Gwil James in their RS 400, Dave and Kate Eccles in their RS 200, Dan Hastings in his OK and Chris and Ann McGeoch in their Flying 15 all achieved good results. On Thursday, the wind did not arrive until the afternoon. So, in the morning, there were races, football(?) matches and other games in the canoes that Tony Howard kind had kindly brought down from the White Water Centre. The only race of the day was won by Dave and Kate Eccles, with Dave and Maggie Bebb in second place in their Albacore and Billy Maguire, sailing his Flying 15 single-handed, in third. On Friday, the Duty Officers managed to get in three races in very light, shifty winds. Dave and Kate Eccles, Phil and Ruth Evans in a Flying 15 and Dan Hastings all had firsts. Mike Davidson, who sailed well in all wind strengths, had two seconds. The participants who did a duty were given their average results for the races they missed. The full results appear below. On the social side, there were two very pleasant, entertaining evenings in particular. One was a beauty competition, organised by Anna McGeoch, to find Miss and Mr Bala Sailing Club. They were judged on their day wear, sailing wear and evening wear. The girls who took part Katie Lewis, Rebecca Taylor and Sarah Collingwood, with a guest appearance in the day wear section from June Hulse sporting apron and duster, took it quite seriously and looked lovely in everything. The men were a different story, as the photos on the website show! Clothes varied from spoof bird watchers garb, binbags for sailing gear, a nightshirt, some sort of fez with a truly horrible loud shirt to the most horrendous pair of yellow flairs set off by a pillar box red shirt. Kate Eccles, Anna McGeoch and John Lewis (dressed like some shady character from a South American drugs cartel) officiated. Voting was very close but Rebecca Taylor is Miss Bala Sailing Club 2001 and Mr Bala Sailing Club wishes to remain anonymous. On Wednesday evening Ann Davidson and Jill Lock kindly organised an excellent barbecue, which was blessed with warm sunshine. This was followed by Mike Clarkes rock/folk band, Root Chords. They were great! We are already looking forward to next years Family Week. RESULTS
The results in bold are given for the duty days. |
