Family Week 2002

All competitors and their families enjoyed lovely weather and a convivial atmosphere throughout Family Week. As well as sailing, opportunities for hill walking and canoeing were available. The crews and helms of 43 dinghies competed in three fleets - Fast Handicap, Slow Handicap and Juniors/Novices. While everyone enjoyed the off-water fun, the sailing was highly competitive and it was noticeable that the confidence and sailing ability of the juniors and novices improved during the week.

Two races took place each day, with the most demanding day being Tuesday when each fleet raced the four miles to Llangower, had a picnic and treasure hunt and raced back to the club.

The 5 day, 10 race series was easily won by Bernie and Steve Bales from the RAF Sailing Association in their new RS 400, which was sailed like a dream after some initial fine tuning. The ever-improving Dave Wall took second place in his Blaze, while Dave Eccles, new to Blaze, sailing gained third place.

The slow handicap racing was won by veteran John Hunter in his Solo, keeping at bay Phil Taylor and Katherine Jones in Laser Radials.

The Junior/Novice fleet was convincingly won by Rebecca Taylor who gained 8 first places in her Optimist. Elin Lloyd and Tomos Lloyd, new to sailing this year, were second and third.

Evening events included folk singing, fancy dress and a quiz and these were ably organised by Billy Maguire and Mike Clarke.
