Jubliee Regatta 2002
Glorious sunny weather greeted the 33 competitors when they arrived on Saturday for the Bala jubilee Regatta. However, over the weekend, not only did we experience Vivald's 'Four Seasons' but on Monday we had Crowded House's 'Four Seasons in one day'! Wind strength and direction also varied suddenly, giving John Lewis, the D.O., quite a headache. In the Fast Handicap, the front of the fleet was dominated by the Flying 15 of Mike Lyddon and Stella Shaw of Bala and the International Moths of Mark Bridgewater of Bartley and Dave Pybus of Queen Mary's, while the Southwells of Winsford Flash and J. Finlay and S. Evans of South Shields, both in Miracles competed for the lead in the Slow Handicap fleet. The four International Moths that participated often enjoyed close racing between themselves and the RS 400 of Steve and Bernie Bales, their boat speeds seeming quite similar. The result of the Fast Handicap fleet was very close and was determined by the outcome of the final race. The winner, the Flying 15 of Mike Lyddon and Stella Shaw, whilst not winning any races, performed consistently well in all conditions and never fell below fifth place. Ralph Jones with two firsts gained second place in his new Blaze, and the International Moth of Dave Pybus in his International Moth was third overall. Had Mark Bridgewater sailed the final race, it is likely that he would have been in contention for first place as he had already won four races. In the Slow Handicap fleet, the Southwells gained four first places and three seconds, demonstrating their superiority in the varying conditions and achieved first place overall. J. Finlay and S. Evans on occasions did challenge the leaders and gained two firsts and three seconds for second place overall. Tony and A. Millicope in their new National 12 were third. A special mention goes to young Jennifer Bailey who in her Topper sailed with style to complete all her races and gain 8th place. Tuesday's event consisted of a 90 minute pursuit and a handicap race and the overall winners were S. Evans and J. Finlay, this time sailing a 29er. Second place went to D. Milner and D. Reynolds of Bradford-on-Avon in their RS 200 and in third place were J. Chadwick and M. Sisley of Bala in their Albacore. Fast Handicap
