Bala Long Distance Pursuit
2003
Sixteen boats including five Flying Dutchmen, sailed the Sunday (6th July) three-hour pursuit race, sponsored by Bala Watersports. The first starters were the RS 200’s and the Blazes who suffered very light conditions at the beginning of the race. The wind strength gradually increased to a good force three and so the slower handicap boats were overtaken an hour before the end of the race. The conditions then favoured the trapezing boats, and the Fireball of Keith McDonald and Andy Brittain took a commanding lead. However, in the final 20 minutes of the race, Colin Newman in his International Canoe overtook the Fireball to win, with the Fireball holding on to second place despite being closed down by the FD of Peter Doran and Richard Phillips.
